Deuteronomy 25:4
4“You shall not muzzle an ox when he is threshing.
This sermon explores the reliability of the Gospel accounts by examining the strength of eyewitness testimonies and historical verification within early Christian documents, using scriptural references to highlight the truth of Christ's resurrection and apostolic witness, thus reinforcing the authenticity and consistency of the Gospel message while reflecting on the motives behind the apostles' unwavering faith.
4“You shall not muzzle an ox when he is threshing.
5And as they were going into the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. 6But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene who was crucified. He has been raised, he is not here! See the place where they laid him! 7But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you.”
15And I will also make every effort that you are able at any time, after my departure, to recall these things to mind. 16For we did not make known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ by following ingeniously concocted myths, but by being eyewitnesses of that one’s majesty. 17For he received honor and glory from God the Father when a voice such as this was brought to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
7so that the genuineness of your faith, more valuable than gold that is passing away, but is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 8whom, although you have not seen, you love; in whom now you believe, although you do not see him, and you rejoice greatly with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9obtaining the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
3because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4And let endurance have its perfect effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing. 5Now if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask for it from God, who gives to all without reservation and not reproaching, and it will be given to him.
6Now without faith it is impossible to please him, for the one who approaches God must believe that he exists and is a rewarder of those who seek him. 7By faith Noah, having been warned about things not yet seen, out of reverence constructed an ark for the deliverance of his family, by which he pronounced sentence on the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith. 8By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out to a place that he was going to receive for an inheritance, and he went out, not knowing where he was going.
5who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time, 6in which you rejoice greatly, although now for a short time, if necessary, you are distressed by various trials, 7so that the genuineness of your faith, more valuable than gold that is passing away, but is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ,
The pastor shared a personal story at the start. What stuck with you from that?
Luke kicks off by saying he wrote his gospel 'so that you may know the certainty.' Why do you think that mattered so much back then?
When you're reading the Gospels, what's something that makes you trust (or question) their reliability?
